What Does “Removable” Mean?

Removable means that the adhesive is designed for later removal under defined conditions. It is not a promise for every surface. Time, heat, cold, paint strength, surface porosity and the removal angle can change the result.

Official industry pages make these limits clear. ORAFOL ORAJET 3169RA states a clean-removal period for most smooth, sealed surfaces and explains when heat may be needed. Avery Dennison’s self-adhesive vinyl guide treats removable, air-egress and repositionable as separate properties.

Removable Is Not the Same as Repositionable

Grey does not mean removable. Grey is the adhesive colour. Removable is the adhesive behaviour. For example, SATPU08GR/160G explicitly states removable grey glue; a model that only says grey glue should not be called removable without evidence.

Which Surfaces Need Extra Care?

Every new surface needs a sample test. Painted walls, fresh paint, weak coatings, porous boards, plasticized PVC, low-energy plastics, rusty panels and heavily curved vehicle parts need special approval or testing.

Fresh paint: wait for full cure and confirm the paint maker’s guidance.
Weak paint: the paint may release before the adhesive does.
Textured or porous wall: contact may be too low or removal may damage the surface.
Dirty, waxed or oily panel: adhesion can be uneven.
Plasticized PVC: plasticizer migration can change the adhesive.
Low-energy plastic: ordinary removable adhesive may not bond.
Heated glass: dark printed areas can change thermal stress; test the full graphic.

Removal Period Is Not the Same as Service Life

Service life tells you how long the graphic system may perform. The clean-removal period tells you when and how the adhesive is intended to be removed. These are separate specifications.

The current SAV08T/70 page uses the wording “1 year removable adhesive,” while SAV10ST/125 uses “3 years removable adhesive.” Treat these as model-page descriptions, not as a residue-free guarantee or a complete outdoor-life statement. Ask for the current TDS, approved surface, exposure conditions, removal temperature and method.

Printing, Lamination and Finishing Checklist

SAV12/140R and SATPU08GR/160G list solvent, eco-solvent, UV and latex compatibility. The current ultra-clear model pages do not publish a complete ink list, so confirm before production.

Confirm the exact printer and ink set.

Start at a corner without cutting into the substrate.
Pull slowly at a low angle.
Use controlled heat only when the current TDS allows it.
Stop if paint, coating or substrate begins to lift.
