How Paper-Transfer Sublimation Works

  1. Print the paper

    Print a mirrored design with a suitable sublimation ink and paper.

  2. Align the fabric

    Place the printed side against the fabric’s print face. Keep both flat.

  3. Apply heat

    Use the tested press or calender setup. Keep contact and movement steady.

  4. Cool and check

    Separate as directed, cool, measure, cut and finish the graphic.

The heat transfers dye into the polyester. Judge the final colour on the cooled fabric—not on the transfer paper.

Woven or Knitted Polyester?

Both can suit transfer dye sublimation. Construction alone does not decide print compatibility.

A knitted backlit model and a knitted backdrop model serve different jobs. Compare diffusion or opacity as well as GSM.

There is no single temperature, time and pressure setting for every fabric. Ask for starting guidance for your exact UNISIGN model, ink, paper and machine.

Flat-press reference only: Sawgrass lists a polyester starting example of 205°C / 45 seconds / medium pressure. This is not a tested UNISIGN model recipe or a rotary-calender setting.

Do not copy a pressure number between different machines. Change one setting at a time and keep the result. Sappi’s transfer manual (PDF) explains how heat, contact, paper and fabric conditions work together.

Control Ghosting, Colour Spread and Shrinkage

A good test includes fine black text, white borders, grey, gradients and full-width solid colours.

Check surface and colour together. Compare the left, centre and right of the cooled print under the same light. Look for bands, pale areas, unwanted texture and changes in solid black. For backlit work, repeat this check with the intended lightbox switched on. Keep the approved print and its settings so the next batch has a clear reference.

How do I check shrinkage?

Mark and measure a sample in both directions. Transfer it, cool it consistently, then measure again. Check the finished sewn graphic in its frame.

Can I order one fabric for backlit and blockout jobs?

These jobs need different light behaviour. Backlit needs light diffusion; blockout needs coverage. Choose and test a model for each application.
