  • Backing: Black, grey, white, silver or a dark inner layer.
  • Print face: One main white face or two printable white faces.
  • Packing: Confirm core size, roll diameter, protective wrapping and pallet needs in the quotation.

For approval: Request a labeled roll sample or cut sample from the same model, width and production plan.

What Is Printable Blockout Fabric?

Printable blockout fabric is an opaque display textile designed to reduce light transmission and background show-through behind a printed graphic. It is often made from polyester. The blocking function can come from a black or grey reverse, a white or silver backing, a coating, or a dark layer inside the fabric.

Blockout fabric is used when a wall color, frame, old graphic or rear light could affect the front image. It is a frontlit or opaque display material. It is not the same as a backlit lightbox fabric, which is designed to transmit and spread light.

Which Printing Methods Work With UNISIGN Blockout Fabric?

The current individual pages for the seven models above list direct dye sublimation and paper-transfer dye sublimation. Do not assume one printing statement applies to every blackback or blockout textile.

Print MethodCurrent Category GuidanceWhat to Test
Direct dye sublimationListed for the current seven modelsInk control, strike-through, drying, heat, shrinkage and backing protection
Paper-transfer dye sublimationListed for the current seven modelsTransfer paper, temperature, dwell time, pressure, color and dimensional change
UV printingUse only when the exact model TDS and sample test confirm itInk adhesion, cracking, stretch, fold marks and curing
Latex / resin printingUse only when the exact model TDS and sample test confirm itCoating compatibility, curing, blocking, rub and finish

Important: The older general black back fabric page mentions several ink types, but the current product pages listed here are model-specific and state direct or transfer dye sublimation. For UV or latex, ask UNISIGN to confirm the exact coated product code in writing.

How Should Blockout Performance Be Tested?

Do not approve a blockout fabric only by holding an unprinted swatch against a window. Print, heat and finish the real material, then test it under the planned light and background.

StepActionRecord
1Condition and identify the sampleModel, lot, GSM, width, face and reverse
2Measure incident illuminance without fabricE0 in lux
3Place the fabric at a fixed distance and tensionOrientation, distance and setup photo
4Measure transmitted illuminance at five or more pointsE1 values at center, edges and seams
5Calculate light-blocking rate(1 − E1 ÷ E0) × 100%
6Repeat after printing, heat and finishingFinal rate, pinholes, edge leaks and visible show-through
7Install against the real wall, frame or reverse graphicPass/fail photos from the agreed viewing distance

For a formal laboratory method, buyer and supplier can agree on AATCC TM148 (photodetector), AATCC TM203 (spectrophotometric), or GB/T 42999-2023 (illuminometer). Confirm the chosen edition, sample condition and pass level in the purchase specification.

This list does not mean every stocked roll automatically meets every standard. Ask for the report that names the exact product, test method, result, laboratory, date and destination use. Venue rules can differ.

For a wider model-and-standard view, compare flame-retardant display fabric models and report requirements.

A 6-Step Blockout Fabric Approval Process

  1. Define the display: size, viewing sides, frame, lighting and background.
  2. Choose the structure: black, grey, white, silver back or double-sided.
  3. Choose two or three models: compare construction before price.
  4. Run the full print process: use the planned ink, paper, heat and profile.
  5. Test opacity and dimensions: measure before and after heat and finishing.
  6. Approve the installed sample: record model, batch, settings and pass limits.

This process creates a repeatable purchase specification. It also reduces the risk of ordering a fabric that looks opaque as a small swatch but fails after printing or installation.

Why Source Blockout Fabric Rolls From UNISIGN?

UNISIGN has produced digital printing materials since 2007. For a reliable comparison, request the latest TDS, current FR document, labeled sample and quotation for the exact model and width.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best blockout fabric for dye sublimation?

There is no single best model for every job. Choose DSP-BLK-01 or DSP-BLK-01F for a black reverse, DSP-BLK-02 for grey back, DSP-BLK-W for white back, and DSP-BLK-D or DSP-BLK-DTR when both faces need separate graphics.

Is black back fabric the same as blockout fabric?

Black back is one type of blockout construction. It uses a white printable face and a black reverse or coating. Blockout is the wider performance category and can also use grey, white, silver or an internal dark layer.

Can blockout polyester fabric be dye sublimated?

Yes. The seven UNISIGN models on this page currently list direct and paper-transfer dye sublimation. Test the complete printer, ink, heat and finishing workflow before a bulk order.

Can UNISIGN blockout fabric be printed with UV or latex inks?

Do not assume UV or latex compatibility for every model. The current individual pages listed here state direct or transfer dye sublimation. Ask for written confirmation and test the exact coated product if UV or latex is required.

Can blockout fabric be printed on both sides?

Only choose a model designed for two printable faces. DSP-BLK-D and DSP-BLK-DTR are the current double-sided starting points. Test registration, show-through, heat history and finishing on both faces.

Does blockout fabric provide 100% opacity?

Some current UNISIGN product pages use the wording “100% obscuring rate,” while other models say “good opacity” or “blockout.” Treat those as supplier descriptions. Agree on a test method and pass level, then approve a printed and finished sample.

What is the maximum width of UNISIGN blockout fabric?

Most current models are listed up to 3.2m / 126 inches. DSP-BLK-01 is currently listed up to 5.0m / 197 inches. Confirm available and guaranteed usable width for the exact roll.

What is the standard roll length?

The current product pages list 100m / 110-yard standard rolls. Available width-and-length combinations should be confirmed on the quotation.

Is flame-retardant blockout fabric available?

The current model pages list FR options including B1, NFPA 701, AS 1530 and JIS L 1091. Request the current report for the exact product code and destination project.

How should I test a blockout fabric sample?

Print and heat the sample, measure light transmission or blocking rate, inspect show-through against the real background, record dimensional change, finish the edges and install it in the intended system.
