Choose by the Job, Not Just Thickness
Monomeric self adhesive vinyl is usually the value choice for flat, shorter-term graphics. Polymeric vinyl generally offers better size stability for longer jobs and approved gentle curves.
Both are commonly calendered PVC films. For deep recesses or complex vehicle shapes, choose a wrap film approved for that surface—often cast vinyl.

What Makes the Two Films Different?
The main difference is the plasticiser system in the PVC film. Plasticisers help PVC stay flexible. Monomeric films use smaller plasticiser molecules. Polymeric films use larger, longer-chain plasticisers, which generally resist migration better. Avery Dennison explains plasticisers and migration in this technical bulletin (PDF).
This helps explain why polymeric films usually hold their size better over time. The full formula and production process still matter. Neither name describes the adhesive colour or guarantees a fixed number of outdoor years.
Choose the Film for the Surface
Compare monomeric for shorter promotions. Compare polymeric when better long-term stability matters.
Start with a polymeric model approved for the shape. Check stretch limits and edge design.
Ask for an approved wrap film, often cast. A polymeric label alone does not approve a full wrap.

Check Adhesive, Ink and Laminate Separately

UV1301 and UV1501 list solvent, eco-solvent, UV and latex inks. Confirm the chosen print setup with a sample. The film class alone does not approve every printer or heat setting.
For changing campaigns, compare removable self adhesive vinyl. A matched laminate protects the print; it does not turn a flat-sign film into a deep-recess wrap film.
Compare Quotes on the Same Basis
A roll price is useful only when you know what it includes. Give each supplier the same job brief, then compare these four points:
- Same roll size: check width and length. A 1.52m × 50m roll contains 76m² before trim and waste. Compare the price per square metre as well as per roll.
- Same adhesive needs: clear, grey, removable and high tack serve different jobs. Do not treat them as equal simply because the film thickness matches.
- Same finished system: include the recommended laminate, print setup and installation method. A lower material price may not give a lower finished-panel cost.
- Same delivery terms: ask for MOQ, lead time, packing, freight terms and current availability for the chosen model.
For repeat work, keep a labelled approved sample. It gives purchasing, printing and installation teams the same reference when a new batch arrives.
Run 4 Sample Checks Before a Bulk Order
Print both samples with the same design and planned workflow. Label each sample with its model and settings.
- Print: colour blocks, fine text, gradients and solid black.
- Finish: drying, lamination, cutting and liner release.
- Apply: bond, coverage, edge hold and fit on the real surface.
- Review: size change, lifted edges and planned removal after an agreed test period.

- Model, film class and thickness

Is polymeric vinyl always better?
No. It generally offers better stability, but monomeric can be the practical choice for a short, flat promotion. Match the specification and cost to the job.
How long does each film last outdoors?
There is no universal lifespan for either class. Use the exact model’s current rating and conditions. Climate, print, laminate, surface and installation affect the finished graphic.
Is polymeric vinyl the same as cast vinyl?
No. Polymeric usually describes the plasticiser system in calendered PVC. Cast describes a different film-making process. Check the product’s approved surface shapes and use.
Can I use monomeric vinyl on a truck?
Some flat-panel advertising jobs may suit an approved monomeric model. Send a surface photo and use period. Do not treat a flat truck side as the same job as a full vehicle wrap.
Does polymeric mean removable?
No. Film class and adhesive removal type are separate specifications. Request a removable adhesive and test it on the actual surface for the planned use period.
Can both films be printed with eco-solvent ink?
Yes, UV1301 and UV1501 list eco-solvent ink. Confirm your printer, ink, drying and laminate setup with a model-specific sample.
