A 120gsm mesh flag fabric is a light polyester textile with small open holes that let more air pass through the flag. It is made for outdoor flags and banners where a solid fabric may catch too much wind.
UNISIGN DSP04 is a warp-knitted mesh flag fabric for direct or paper-transfer dye sublimation.
- Weight: 120gsm / 3.5oz
- Maximum width: 3.2m / 126 inches
- Standard roll: 100m / 110 yards
- Listed shrinkage: ≤2%
- Main use: Outdoor flags and banners
Do not choose it by GSM alone. Test airflow, print-through, color, strength, shrinkage, sewing and the complete flag system before a bulk order.

What Is 120gsm Mesh Flag Fabric?
It is a lightweight polyester flag textile with open holes made in the knit.
- 120gsm means about 120 grams per square meter.
- Mesh means the fabric has open spaces for air to pass through.
- Warp knitted describes how the yarn loops form the fabric.
- Dye sublimation adds the image to the polyester with heat.
The mesh structure matters more than the extra 10gsm when comparing it with a 110gsm solid flag fabric.
Why Use Mesh Fabric for Outdoor Flags?
A solid flag can act like a sail. Wind pushes against the full surface. A mesh flag gives the air more paths through the fabric.
This can help reduce load on:
- The flag fabric
- Sewn edges
- Eyelets and sleeves
- Flag poles
- Mounts and brackets
Simple airflow idea
More surface for wind to push
Open holes let more air pass
This is a simple diagram, not a wind-load test. Final safety depends on the flag, finishing, pole, mount, location and weather.
Do not promise a fixed wind speed or service life without a product-specific test. Mesh can reduce wind load, but it does not make a flag storm-proof.
Where Can 120gsm Mesh Flag Fabric Be Used?
| Application | Why Mesh May Help | What to Test |
|---|---|---|
| Beach Flags | Open sites often have steady wind | Shape, pole fit, print-through and edge wear |
| Feather Flags | Air can pass through the printed area | Sleeve, curve, tension and movement |
| Teardrop Flags | Can reduce pressure on the fabric and frame | Frame size, stretch and seam position |
| Event Flags | Light weight helps transport and setup | Repeat use, folding, washing and color |
| Stadium Flags | Useful for large moving graphics | Viewing distance, airflow and finishing |
| Pole Flags | Mesh can help in open outdoor areas | Pole system, wind plan and reinforced edges |
| Outdoor Banners | Open holes reduce the sail effect | Size, fixing points, hems and local rules |
| Long-Term Building Wraps | May need a different mesh system | Engineering, codes, certified airflow and service life |

120gsm Mesh vs 110gsm Solid Flag Fabric
| Point | 120gsm DSP04 Mesh | 110gsm DSP02 / DSP02TB |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Open warp-knitted mesh | Solid warp-knit fabric |
| Airflow | More air can pass through | More wind hits the full surface |
| Printed Surface | Open holes are visible | Smoother solid surface |
| Fine Detail | Test small text and thin lines | Often easier on a solid surface |
| Print-Through | Open structure can help the reverse image show | Depends on fabric and ink load |
| Main Starting Point | Outdoor flags in more exposed sites | General flag printing and more sheltered use |
Higher GSM does not always mean a stronger outdoor flag. Construction, airflow, sewing, hardware and use conditions all matter.
Mesh Flag Fabric vs PVC Mesh
| Point | Polyester Mesh Flag Fabric | PVC Mesh |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft and textile-like | More rigid banner material |
| Common Printing | Dye sublimation for DSP04 | Often UV, latex or solvent |
| Common Use | Flags, event graphics and light banners | Fences, wraps and larger fixed banners |
| Finishing | Usually sewn | Often welded or hemmed |
| Selection | Choose for light textile movement | Consider for longer fixed outdoor work |
Do not treat the two materials as direct replacements. Match the material to the use time, size, wind, fixing method and local safety rules.
Can DSP04 Be Used for Direct and Transfer Sublimation?
Yes. UNISIGN currently lists DSP04 for direct and paper-transfer dye sublimation.
| Printing Method | DSP04 | Main Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Dye Sublimation | Supported | Feeding, ink control, print-through and heat setting |
| Paper-Transfer Dye Sublimation | Supported | Paper, pressure, temperature, ghosting and shrinkage |
Test the full process:
Printer + Ink + Paper if used + Fabric + Heat + Time + Finishing
How Should Print-Through Be Tested?
A single printed flag often shows a mirror image on the reverse. This is called print-through. It is not the same as printing two different images on two sides.
- Print red, blue, black and neutral gray blocks.
- Add fine text and thin lines.
- Measure or photograph the front in fixed light.
- Turn the sample over without changing the light.
- Compare color, detail and white areas.
- View it against the sky and against a dark wall.
- Approve the result at the real viewing distance.
Ask the buyer whether a mirror image on the back is acceptable. If two different graphics are required, a different double-sided flag system may be needed.
How Should Shrinkage and Size Be Tested?
DSP04 is currently listed with shrinkage of ≤2%. Test it with the planned heat process.
- Mark a measured square in both fabric directions.
- Record the starting width and length.
- Run the normal print and heat process.
- Let the fabric cool.
- Measure it again.
- Sew the real hem or pole sleeve.
- Fit it to the real pole or frame.
- Record the final cutting allowance.
Why Does the 3.2m Width Matter?
DSP04 is currently listed up to 3.2m / 126 inches wide. A wider roll can help reduce seams in large flags and banners.
Before ordering, confirm:
- Available width for the exact batch
- Usable print width
- Printer and heat machine width
- Edge and sewing allowance
- Roll length and core size
- Packed roll weight
What Controls Outdoor Flag Life?
No supplier should promise one fixed outdoor life for every site. Flag life changes with the complete system.
| Factor | Why It Matters | Buyer Action |
|---|---|---|
| Wind | Creates repeated load and edge wear | Define the site and take-down plan |
| Sun | Can change color over time | Approve ink and color test data |
| Rain and Salt | Can add dirt and stress the fabric | Plan cleaning and drying |
| Flag Size | Larger flags create more load | Match size to pole and hardware |
| Sewing | Weak edges can fail first | Test hems, sleeves and corners |
| Hardware | Poor mounts can damage the flag | Inspect poles, clips and brackets |
| Use Time | 24-hour use is harder than event use | Set an inspection and replacement plan |
Remove flags during unsafe or extreme weather when required by the flag-system supplier and local safety plan.
What FR Options Are Listed for DSP04?
The current DSP04 page lists B1, NFPA 701, AS 1530 and JIS L 1091 options.
Before ordering, ask for:
- The exact product code covered
- The test standard
- The report number
- The testing company
- The current report status
- The market and venue requirement
Do not assume one FR report covers every flag fabric.
How Should Buyers Test a 120gsm Mesh Flag Sample?
| Stage | Check | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Before Printing | GSM, width, mesh shape, defects and roll ID | Measurements and photos |
| During Printing | Feeding, flatness, ink spread and strike-through | Printer, ink, paper and profile |
| After Heat | Color, detail, shrinkage and curl | Time, temperature and size change |
| Reverse View | Print-through and mirror image | Front/back photos in fixed light |
| Finishing | Cutting, sewing, hems, sleeves and corners | Edge quality and final size |
| Flag System | Pole fit, movement and hardware contact | Installed photos and notes |
| Outdoor Trial | Wind movement, color and edge wear | Site, dates and inspection result |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 120gsm mesh flag fabric?
It is a lightweight polyester flag fabric with an open mesh structure. The holes let more air pass through than a solid flag fabric.
Is mesh flag fabric good for windy outdoor sites?
It can be a useful choice because the mesh lets more air pass through and can reduce the sail effect. The full flag, pole, mount and site must still be checked.
Is 120gsm mesh better than 110gsm solid flag fabric?
It depends on the job. Choose mesh when airflow is a key need. Choose solid fabric when a smoother print surface and stronger color coverage are more important.
Can DSP04 be printed by direct dye sublimation?
Yes. UNISIGN currently lists DSP04 for direct and paper-transfer dye sublimation.
Will the image show on the back of a mesh flag?
A mirror image can show through to the reverse. Test front and back color with the real printer, ink and heat process.
Can I print two different images on DSP04?
DSP04 is a single mesh fabric. Normal print-through creates a mirror image, not two separate graphics. Ask about a different double-sided system if two images are needed.
How wide is DSP04 mesh flag fabric?
UNISIGN currently lists a maximum width of 3.2m / 126 inches. Confirm stock and usable print width before ordering.
How much does DSP04 shrink?
The current listed value is ≤2%. Test shrinkage under the planned heat, time and pressure.
How long will an outdoor mesh flag last?
There is no single honest answer for every site. Life depends on wind, sun, rain, salt, flag size, sewing, hardware, use time and care.
What documents should I request?
Ask for the current technical data sheet, a production sample, product-specific FR documents where needed, batch details and agreed print and shrinkage results.
