UNISIGN · PVC BANNER KNOWLEDGE GUIDE
Choose 10 oz / 340 GSM when the order requires lower roll weight, short-run promotional use or a specified 340 GSM construction. Choose 13 oz / 440 GSM when the order requires the standard heavier frontlit grade or a specified 440 GSM construction.
By oz rating, 13 oz contains 30% more material mass per unit area than 10 oz. Weight alone does not prove strength or service life.
When Should You Choose 10 oz or 13 oz?
Choose 10 oz / 340 GSM When:
- You are producing indoor event graphics, trade-show promotions or short campaigns.
- The order specifies 10 oz or 340 GSM.
- The purchasing plan requires lower finished-banner and full-roll weight.
Choose 13 oz / 440 GSM When:
- You are producing a standard heavier solid frontlit banner order.
- The buyer, tender document or order specifies 13 oz or 440 GSM.
- The customer requires a heavier feel than 340 GSM material.
10 oz vs 13 oz Banner Material: Quick Comparison
| Comparison | 10 oz | 13 oz | Buying Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact conversion | 339.1 g/m² | 440.8 g/m² | Commercial specifications use 340 GSM and 440 GSM. |
| Material mass at the same area | 100% | 130% | +30% by oz rating; +29.4% using the 340/440 GSM commercial grades. |
| Main purchase fit | Lower roll weight, short-run promotion or a specified 340 GSM grade | Standard heavier frontlit specification or a specified 440 GSM grade | Choose by the order specification and required finished weight. |
| Finished banner and roll handling | Lighter | 30% heavier at the same area | The difference grows with wider rolls and larger orders. |
| Material use | Less material mass | More material mass | Compare quotations for the same construction, width and roll length. |
| Strength decision | GSM alone does not prove tensile strength, tear strength or outdoor life. | Compare the construction, test data and finished samples. | |
This guide compares solid frontlit banner material. Perforated 10 oz mesh is a different construction and is not part of this comparison.
How Many GSM Are 10 oz and 13 oz?
Convert oz/yd² to GSM
Here, oz means ounces per square yard. It is not the weight of a full roll.
1 oz/yd² = 33.90575 g/m²oz / GSM Converter
Enter either value. The other value updates automatically.
13 oz Is 30% Heavier Than 10 oz by oz Rating
This chart compares net material mass at the same area.
13 ÷ 10 = 1.30. In the other direction, 10 oz is 23.1% lighter than 13 oz.
Commercial specifications use 340 GSM and 440 GSM, a 29.4% difference. Use the commercial GSM value on the order for roll-weight calculations.
How Much Weight Do You Save with the Same Roll Size?

Net Roll Weight Calculator
Roll width × roll length × GSM ÷ 1,000 = net material weight
Weight difference: 8.0 kg.
Use packed gross weight, including the core, packaging and pallet, for freight quotations.
| Standard 50 m Roll | 340 GSM Net Weight | 440 GSM Net Weight | Difference per Roll |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 m × 50 m | 27.2 kg | 35.2 kg | 8.0 kg |
| 3.2 m × 50 m | 54.4 kg | 70.4 kg | 16.0 kg |
| 5 m × 50 m | 85.0 kg | 110.0 kg | 25.0 kg |
Is 13 oz Always Stronger and More Durable Than 10 oz?
No. Weight alone does not prove strength or service life. A 13 oz rating proves higher material mass per unit area. Tensile strength, tear strength and finished-banner performance also come from the base fabric, thread density, coating, edge finishing and installation.
Check 3 Things Before Buying
- Construction: compare solid frontlit products with the same surface and back color.
- Test data: read the tensile and tear values for each model.
- Finished sample: print, hem, weld and add eyelets before approval.
GSM Does Not Prove These Points
- GSM is not thickness.
- GSM is not outdoor service life.
- GSM is not a fire rating.
- GSM does not mean the material supports two-sided printing.
How to Compare 340 GSM and 440 GSM Samples
- Use the Same ArtworkPrint the same colors, gradients, text and dark areas on both materials.
- Keep Print Conditions EqualUse the same printer, ink, RIP and curing settings.
- Apply the Real FinishingHem, weld, add eyelets or make pole pockets with the production method.
- Record the ResultCompare feeding, flatness, color, scratch resistance, curl and edge finishing.

10 oz vs 13 oz Banner Material FAQ
Should I choose 10 oz or 13 oz for a standard frontlit banner?
Choose 13 oz / 440 GSM for a standard heavier frontlit specification. Choose 10 oz / 340 GSM when the order requires lower roll weight, short-run promotional use or a specified 340 GSM construction.
Is 10 oz exactly 340 GSM?
The exact conversion is 339.1 g/m², commonly listed as 340 GSM. The exact conversion for 13 oz is 440.8 g/m², commonly listed as 440 GSM.
How much heavier is 13 oz than 10 oz?
At the same area, 13 oz is 30% heavier than 10 oz by oz rating. Using the commercial 340/440 GSM grades, 440 GSM is 29.4% heavier than 340 GSM.
Is 13 oz always thicker?
No. Oz and GSM measure mass per unit area, not thickness. Use the measured thickness for the exact product model.
Does 13 oz always last longer?
No. Weight alone does not prove service life. Compare the base fabric, tensile and tear data, coating and finished-sample result for each model.
Does 13 oz produce better print quality than 10 oz?
No. Print quality depends on the print surface, ink, RIP settings, ink load and curing. Compare both samples with the same artwork and print conditions.
Do 340 GSM and 440 GSM use the same printing methods?
The listed UNISIGN frontlit models support Solvent, Eco-solvent, UV and Latex printing. Test the production printer, ink and settings on the selected sample before the full order.
How do I calculate the net weight of a roll?
Roll width (m) × roll length (m) × GSM ÷ 1,000 = net material weight (kg). Freight weight also includes the core, packaging and pallet.
