Wide-Format Panel & Seam Planner

Use this wide format panel calculator to split an oversized banner, backdrop, wall graphic or soft-signage image into balanced printable panels. See the panel count, seam positions and estimated roll length before production.

Quick answer: use the real printable width—not only the nominal roll width. Every internal overlap reduces the finished coverage of the next panel.

The tool uses a balanced panel layout. All values remain editable.

Presets are planning starts, not stock promises. Confirm the exact ordered and usable print width.

Enter the roll width quoted for this job. The tool subtracts printer margins next.

Optional. Use 0 if there is no handling, table or finishing limit.

How the Panel & Seam Calculation Works

    1. Find the real usable print width:Usable print width = roll width − 2 × printer edge margin2. Find the minimum balanced panel count:Panels × usable width − (panels − 1) × overlap ≥ finished span + outer trim3. Estimate media length:Total linear media = panels × panel run length × quantity × (1 + extra %)
Vertical panelsRoll width is divided across the graphic width. The roll runs in the direction of the finished height.
Horizontal panelsRoll width is divided across the graphic height. The roll runs in the direction of the finished width.
Auto modeThe tool compares both layouts, chooses the lower estimated roll length and then prefers fewer seams when use is equal.

UNISIGN Width Presets Used by the Planner

These are nominal planning presets based on current UNISIGN pages. A listed supply width is not the same as printable width. Confirm the model, actual roll tolerance, printer loading width, inked width and finishing area before production.

Check These 10 Items Before Printing

    • Actual roll width and width tolerance
    • Printer maximum media and inked width
    • RIP tiling, crop marks and panel order
    • Image direction and material grain
    • Model-specific heat or cure shrinkage
    • Overlap, weld, tape or double-cut method
    • Outer bleed, hem, pocket and sewing needs
    • Critical text, faces and logos near seams
    • Panel length, take-up and finishing-table limits
    • Full-size test of print and finished seam

Important: the calculator plans flat rectangular geometry. It does not approve wind load, attachment, wall condition, structural safety, fire compliance or installer method.

Wide-Format Panel & Seam Planner FAQs

How many panels do I need for an oversized print?

Use the real usable print width after printer margins. Each additional panel adds coverage, but each internal overlap removes part of that coverage. The planner calculates the minimum balanced panel count.

Should wide-format panels run vertically or horizontally?

Compare roll use, seam count, image content, grain direction, finishing equipment and installation access. Auto mode chooses lower estimated media use, but production staff should approve the final direction.

Is nominal roll width the same as printable width?

No. Edge condition, printer loading limits and non-printable margins can reduce the inked width. Enter the actual roll width and printer margin for the job.

How much overlap should I use?

Use the overlap required by the installed media and finishing method. Welding, tape, paste, sewing and double-cut methods can need different values. Test the real material and equipment first.

Does the planner include hems, pole pockets or silicone edge?

Only the outer trim or bleed entered in the form is included. Add the verified finishing allowance required by your workflow; pockets, hems and SEG sewing need separate production rules.

Can a 3.2m roll make a 3.2m finished seamless image?

Not automatically. Printer margins, heat shrinkage, edge trimming and finishing can reduce the finished width below the nominal roll width.

Need Media for a Wide-Format Panel Job?

Send the material type, printer model, finished size, required roll width, seam method and order quantity. UNISIGN can confirm applicable roll options and sample data.
