Free PVC tarp planning tool

Tarpaulin Size & Weight Calculator

Use this tarpaulin weight calculator to estimate cut size, fabric area, base material weight, finished handling weight and eyelet count for rectangular PVC tarps.

Quick formula: weight in kg = area in m² × GSM ÷ 1,000. Hems, seams, webbing, rope, patches and eyelets add weight, so keep them separate.

All presets are editable planning values. Use the approved product specification for ordering.

The preset changes the GSM and nominal maximum roll width below.

Use 0 if eyelets are not required.

How the Tarpaulin Weight Calculation Works

1. Add the entered edge fold to the cut size:Cut dimension = finished dimension + 2 × edge fold2. Calculate the base PVC fabric weight:Base weight (kg) = cut area (m²) × GSM ÷ 1,0003. Add a separate finishing estimate:Estimated finished weight = base weight × (1 + finishing extra %)
GSM is area weightGSM tells you the nominal grams per square meter. It does not by itself prove tear strength, coating quality, UV life or waterproof performance.
Cut area is not finished areaA folded or welded hem needs material outside the requested finished size. Enter the actual production allowance used by your fabricator.
Hardware stays approximateWebbing, rope, eyelets, D-rings, patches, labels and packing vary. The finishing percentage is a planning allowance, not a certified shipment weight.

Tarpaulin Size & Weight Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate tarpaulin weight from GSM?

Multiply the material area in square meters by GSM and divide by 1,000. A 10m × 8m rectangle in 650gsm material is about 52kg before hems, reinforcement and hardware.

Why is the finished tarp heavier than the GSM calculation?

Folded hems, welded overlaps, webbing, rope, patches, eyelets, D-rings, labels, repair pieces and surface moisture can add weight. Enter a finishing percentage only as a planning estimate.

Is higher GSM always a stronger tarpaulin?

No. GSM measures area weight. Base yarn, weave density, PVC formula, coating adhesion, tensile strength, tear strength, UV treatment and fabrication quality also matter.

How does the calculator estimate eyelet quantity?

It divides each finished side into equal intervals no larger than the entered spacing and counts shared corner eyelets once. Confirm the actual shop drawing and reinforcement layout.

Can the entered roll width make the tarp in one piece?

The tool checks whether the shorter cut dimension fits across the entered roll width. If not, welded or sewn panels are needed. Use the wide-format panel and seam planner as an initial layout reference.

Is calculated weight the same as shipping weight?

No. Shipping weight can include packing, cores, pallets, moisture, accessories and production tolerance. Confirm final net and gross weight with the approved order.
