How the Banner Finishing Calculation Works
Cut allowance = entered hem allowancePole-pocket edge:Cut allowance = 2 × finished flat pocket depth + seam or weld allowanceArtwork file:Artwork size = visible finished size + 2 × entered bleedBase material weight:Cut area (m²) × GSM ÷ 1,000Choose the Finish Before You Calculate
| Finish | What the calculator adds | What to confirm | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| No added allowance | 0mm on that edge | Raw, hot-cut or trimmed edge | Temporary or insert graphics |
| Hem | Entered hem allowance once | Fold direction, weld width and corner reinforcement | Hanging banners and fence banners |
| Pole pocket | 2 × flat depth + seam allowance | Pole diameter, end opening, pocket position and graphic direction | Street banners, hanging bars and display poles |
| Eyelets | Quantity estimate only | Diameter, material, spacing, corner position and reinforcement | Tied banners and perimeter fixing |
For material selection, compare the PVC banner material range, use the PVC banner material selector, or review frontlit banner rolls and blockout banner material.

Banner Cut Size & Finishing FAQs
How much material should I add for a banner hem?
Add the production-approved hem allowance on each hemmed edge. A 50mm hem on the left and right adds 100mm to the cut width. Weld width, corner patches and trimming practice may change the final allowance.
How do I calculate material for a pole pocket?
A simple starting point is two times the finished flat pocket depth plus the seam or weld allowance. Confirm pole diameter, ease, end openings and whether the requested finished size includes the pocket.
How many eyelets does a banner need?
The calculator divides each selected finished edge into equal intervals no larger than the entered maximum spacing and counts shared corners once. The correct spacing also depends on wind, fixing method, reinforcement and installation design.
Is artwork size the same as cut size?
Not always. Artwork size includes the visible image plus bleed. Cut size includes physical material for hems and pole pockets. Prepress may extend background color into the finishing area.
Can the banner be made from one roll width?
The tool checks whether the shorter cut dimension fits across the entered roll width. If it does not fit, plan panels and seam overlap with the wide-format panel and seam planner.
Does the calculated weight include eyelets and reinforcement?
No. It estimates the base PVC material from cut area and GSM. Eyelets, rope, webbing, corner patches, ink, packing and production tolerance add weight.
