RETAIL DISPLAY MATERIAL SELECTION
Banner Materials for Retail Hanging and POP Displays
Choose retail hanging banner material by viewing sides, light, surface, hardware and rollout size. Then lock the SKU, print setup, master sample and color limit for every store.

Which Material Fits a Retail Hanging Banner?
- One visible face, no backlight: use matte frontlit PVC or display polyester.
- Two visible faces with different artwork: use double-side printable blockout PVC or double-side blockout fabric.
- One visible face with store light or fixtures behind it: use a black-back blockout fabric.
- Clamp rail or pole pocket: test the finished edge at full width before the rollout.
- Many stores and repeat orders: approve one printed master and record the roll ID, printer, ink, RIP, profile and written ΔE00 limit.
Select POP Banner Media by Display Job
| Retail display job | Material route | Why it fits | Approval test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall or window graphic with one visible face | Matte frontlit PVC | Wipe-clean face and strong edge finishing | Print glare under the store lamps; finished rail or pocket |
| Ceiling sign viewed from two aisles | Double-side blockout PVC or fabric | Opaque core separates the two graphics | Both artworks under store light; front-to-back show-through |
| Fabric sign with one visible face | Black-back blockout fabric | Black reverse stops fixtures and old graphics from showing through | Print face, black reverse, full-size hanging edge |
| Lightweight textile POP panel | Display polyester | Soft hand, foldable shipment and fabric appearance | Heat shrinkage, hem or pocket, final hanging size |
| Backlit retail lightbox | Backlit fabric or backlit banner | Light transmission and diffusion are the main functions | Printed panel inside the production lightbox |
Scope rule: a retail hanging banner is not a roll-up graphic. A retractable cassette needs non-curl roll-up media and its own hardware test.
Use 7 Fixed Controls for Every Store
Retail color control needs one written record. Apply the same seven fields to the first order, split shipments and reorders.
- SKUOne exact material model
- Roll IDLot and roll on every job ticket
- MasterOne approved printed sample
- Print setupPrinter, ink and RIP
- ProfileOne named media profile
- Control stripSame color patches on each run
- Color limitOne written ΔE00 limit
ISO/TS 15311-2 defines measurement and reporting for digital commercial print, but it does not set one tolerance for every application. Put the project ΔE00 limit in the purchase order. Measure the same patches with the same instrument and method. The Idealliance wide-format program also evaluates a specific printer, RIP, ink and media combination for color accuracy, uniformity and repeatability.
Approve the master
Print the production file on the named SKU. Sign and date the approved sample.
Record traceability
Place the lot and roll ID on the job ticket, carton and retained print strip.
Measure finished dimensions
Measure width, height, pocket depth and hardware position after print and finishing.
Match the retained master
Run the same control strip and record ΔE00 before the full batch.
One Printed Face or Two?
| Viewing plan | Correct construction | Back appearance | Do not use |
|---|---|---|---|
| One main face; wall behind | Matte frontlit PVC or standard display fabric | Back stays out of view | Extra blockout weight without a light-blocking need |
| One main face; bright fixture behind | Black-back or other opaque construction | Dark reverse blocks the background | Open standard fabric in front of lamps |
| Same artwork on both sides | Two printed panels or one approved two-face blockout material | Both sides carry the campaign | One translucent sheet with mirror bleed-through |
| Different artwork on both sides | Double-side printable blockout PVC or fabric | Opaque center separates both images | Standard frontlit banner |
Print both faces with the production artwork. Judge the result from the normal aisle distance under the installed store lamps.
Control Glare Under Retail Lighting
Downlights create bright reflections on glossy media. Matte PVC and textile surfaces keep product names and prices easier to read from changing aisle angles. Use this test:
- Print a product photo, deep black, small price text and a neutral gray patch.
- Hang the sample at the final height and angle.
- Turn on the production store lamps.
- Inspect from the main aisle, side aisle and checkout path.
- Approve the surface that keeps text readable at all three positions.

Retail Hanging Banner Material FAQ
What material is used for retail hanging banners?
Use matte frontlit PVC or display polyester for one visible face. Use double-side blockout PVC or fabric for two visible faces with separate artwork.
What is the best material for a two-sided POP banner?
Use a double-side printable blockout construction. CDM2525/510 is the listed PVC route. DSP-BLK-D is the listed textile route.
How do I stop the rear image from showing through?
Use a blockout core and print the production artwork on both faces. Judge show-through under the final store lighting.
Is fabric or PVC better for an indoor retail banner?
Use fabric for a soft surface and foldable shipment. Use PVC for a wipe-clean surface and strong welded or eyelet finishing. Select the route from the hardware and viewing sides.
How do chain stores keep banner color consistent?
Lock the SKU, printer, ink, RIP and profile. Approve one master. Print the same control strip, record each roll ID and apply one written ΔE00 limit.
How do I reduce glare on a POP banner?
Use a matte PVC or textile surface. Hang the printed sample at the final height and judge it from the main aisle, side aisle and checkout path.
What keeps a hanging banner flat?
Use straight clamp rails or matched top and bottom poles. State the finished size and pocket depth. Approve one full-width finished sample before the rollout.
What goes in a retail rollout approval pack?
Include the SKU, roll ID, approved master, print setup, media profile, control strip data, ΔE00 result, finished dimensions, hardware drawing and carton label.
Build a Retail Rollout Sample Set
Send the store count, graphic sizes, viewing faces, lighting, hardware, printer, color limit, shipment split and destination. The response will map the project to a PVC or fabric SKU and a written approval test.
