Roll Weight Formula

When width and length are in meters:Net media weight (kg) = width (m) × length (m) × GSM ÷ 1,000Useful conversion:1 oz/yd² = 33.9057 gsm · 1 m² = 1.19599 yd² · 1 kg = 2.20462 lb
Example 1 · Textile3.2m × 100m × 230gsm = 73.60kg of fabric per roll.
Example 2 · PVC banner3.2m × 50m × 440gsm = 70.40kg of media per roll.
Example 3 · Tarpaulin5.1m × 50m × 650gsm = 165.75kg of media per roll.

Printable Media Roll Weight Calculator FAQs

What does GSM mean?

GSM means grams per square meter. It is the approximate mass of one square meter of material. GSM describes weight, not strength, thickness, opacity or quality by itself.

Does release-liner GSM equal total self-adhesive vinyl GSM?

No. A label such as 140gsm liner describes the release paper only. The complete roll also includes face film and adhesive. Use the total construction GSM from the current TDS or select the known net roll weight method.

Does the result include the core, bag, carton and pallet?

Only if you add a core and packing allowance per roll. Pallet weight is not added automatically. Ask for the final packing list when planning transport.

Why can the actual roll weight differ from the calculation?

Production GSM tolerance, coating weight, moisture, actual roll length, core type and packing can change the measured result. Treat the calculator as a planning estimate.

Can this tool calculate freight cost?

No. Freight cost can depend on route, service, shipment dimensions, pallets, density, chargeable weight and current rates. The calculator prepares area and weight data for a forwarder quotation.

Should I use maximum product width as the order width?

Not automatically. Maximum width is a supply limit. Enter the exact width quoted for your order because width changes roll area and weight directly.
